Bufo fowleri

Characteristics:
A large toad (for this area) reaching a body length of around 4in. They are usually gray or greenish-gray with dark markings that have 3 or more warts. Often times there is a thin light stripe down the back. Also the warts on the lower leg are the same size as the warts on the upper leg.  These toads are very similar in appearance to the American toad.

Habitat:
Found in a variety of habitats. Woodland streams, lowland forests, flood plains, and even landscaping in people's yards.

Behavior:
The Fowler's toad is very similar in appearance and behavior to the American toad. They share habitat, breeding sites, and have even been known to hybridize. The primary differences between the two species are in their calls, wart distribution, and wart size (specifically on the legs). American x Fowler's crosses tend to have characteristics of both species making identification difficult.

Personal Remarks:
We see these less often than the American toad but still it is not an uncommon find by any means. At one location we frequent we see these and American toads all over the road at night during the summer. The line between American and Fowler's can get blurry when the two species live so close together like that. Usually, though, they are fairly easy to tell apart when you know what to look for.
