Hyla cinerea

Characteristics:
This medium sized frog is about 2in long. They have a very bright green coloration with a pale yellow or white strip that runs from the mouth down the side. Sometimes there are small yellow spots on the back. Each toe has a distinct round pad on it.

Habitat:
Most commonly found in the cypress swamps in IL and MO. They are also seen in other weedy aquatic habitats in the southern portion of the two states.

Behavior:
This is a frog that can change its color based on temperature. They are brighter green when it is warm and dark green when cool. They congregate in large numbers in the summer for breeding. Eggs are laid in the water attached to submerged debris. They eat a variety of insects and can be seen hunting for food after a fresh rain.

Personal Remarks:
This is a stunning frog. The bright green is really bright. You have to see it in person to really appreciate it. These guys are only found in the most southern counties in IL so we don't get to see them as often as we would like. A trip to Snake Road is never complete without stopping to shoot a few photos of these guys sitting in the weeds.
