Acris crepitans

Characteristics:
This small frog is only about an inch in length. Their colors are variable, but they are usually olive or brown with a green or reddish stripe down their back as well as a stripe from eye to eye. They also have a dark triangle shaped mark between their eyes. Their skin is very warty and they have a small pad on the end of each toe.

*Note: The cricket frogs in this area are considerd to be the subspecies Blanchard's cricket frog (A. c. blanchardi)

Habitat:
Found in or around nearly all aquatic habitats. They prefer shallower water with plenty of weedy vegetation.

Behavior:
The cricket frog is small but quite noisy creature. During their breeding season, which extends from April all the way through August, males can be heard calling from the waters edge. They are surprisingly loud considering their size. When starteled, cricket frogs will use a series of quick erratic hops to escape. They also will often times jump into the water and immediatley swim back to the shore. This is a very cold tolerant species and can be found active in very cold weather.

Personal Remarks:
This is a very common frog in out area. We know of several locations where you can go and find lots and lots of them without even looking. They seem to prefer bodies of water that have lots of shoreline and shallow water vegetation. We commonly see them sitting on floating vegatation calling.
