Rana sphenocephala

Characteristics:
A medium sized frog around 3in. Generally tan or olive colored. The back is marked with dark round spots and is sometimes green. The leopard frog has no spot on its snout and there is often times a light spot on the typanum. The dorsolateral folds are unbroken and continues all the way down the back.

Habitat:
Found in or around nearly all aquatic habitats. They prefer shallower water with plenty of weedy vegetation.

Behavior:
As with the other species of leopard frogs in this region, the southern leopard frog is a very powerful jumper. They can leap long distances and can be quite difficult to catch. They breed in the spring and the males can be heard calling from shallow water with lots of vegetation. The southern leopard frog is a ferocious predator and will eat nearly anything it can fit into its mouth.

Personal Remarks:
This is one of our most commonly encountered frogs. We see them at nearly every location that has water. Sometimes we even find them quite far from water in forests or while crossing roads. We see them so often that it is easy to overlook how spectacular of a frog they really are. There are times when we have literally see hundereds in one night. The warm summer rain really brings these guys out.
