Pseudacris crucifer

Characteristics:

This small frog averages about 1inch in body length. Usually tan or grayish in coloration, their back is marked with a conspicuous dark "X". There is also a dark line along the upper jaw. This frog has noticable pads on its toes.

Habitat:
They prefer low shrubs and other plants in moist forests. Druing breeding season they can be found around flooded farm fields and road side ditches.

Behavior:
These guys are not seen outside of breeding season very often, but during breeding season they appear in large numbers. They breed in the early spring and are considered to be the harbingers of spring. They can be heard from quite a distance away calling alone or in groups around water sources. They eat mostly small insects and spiders.

Personal Remarks:
I love hearing these guys calling. It lets me know that its finally spring. For such a small frog they sure can make a lot of noise. They can be heard calling from nearly every body of water around here in the spring and it can be quite loud. It is odd how they are so abundant all through the spring but as soon as it really starts to heat up they completely disappear.
